Strada Announces Two New Sustainable Design Projects
November 30, 2004

PITTSBURGH, PA – Strada proudly announces that the firm has been awarded two new projects that are being designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification criteria by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Nationwide Centre and Beau Street Park are part of Phase One of “The Crossroads” - a mixed-use development in Washington, PA developed by Millcraft Industries. As the first green building and park in Washington, PA, the project will set the green standards for other future area developments. Sustainable features include: recycled materials, efficient mechanical systems, maximum use of day lighting, low emitting materials manufactured locally, low water usage and heat reduction landscaping elements. The 140,000 s.f. seven-story office building will include first floor retail and an adjacent parking garage, and is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2006.

The Blackbird Lofts urban mixed-use project combines a lower level garage, ground floor retail and 15 loft style apartments in one building that fits in with the 19th Century character of the commercial street. The small lot size (11,600 s.f.) required 100% coverage, numerous zoning variances and a creative approach using the site's slope to incorporate the garage. Located in Lawrenceville, PA, this project was developed by Blackbird Development LLC, a project of Artists and Cities, Inc. This project will be the first mixed-use building to be LEED certified in the Western Pennsylvania Region and will be completed in Summer 2005.

Strada’s knowledge and commitment to “green” urban design and building practices and principles have always been an integral part of the firm’s design process and material selection. Even before the creation of LEED, many of Strada’s projects and plans have focused on the revitalization of urban neighborhoods and incorporated recycled materials, natural ventilation and lighting, construction waste management, and public transportation elements. Many of the projects are based on the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, interiors, and urban sites and districts, which is an inherently sustainable approach to design. With principal leadership in LEED, Strada provides full LEED certification services to its clients.

Strada, an architecture, interior design, landscape, and urban design firm, is located in the Pittsburgh Cultural District and was founded in 2000 by Alan J. Cuteri, AIA, LEED; Edward A. Shriver, Jr., AIA, CCS; John A. Martine, AIA; and Michael A. Stern, ASLA. Strada employs 18 creative and passionate individuals who value knowledge, collaboration, and creativity.
