Strada Receives Honor Award from AIA Pittsburgh Chapter
October 28, 2004

PITTSBURGH, PA – Strada recently received an Honor Award in Interior Architecture from the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the design of Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Bioimage Informatics. The design challenge was to convert an automotive engine lab into a hi-tech bioimaging facility. Strada’s design utilized the high ceilings and large south-facing windows of the industrial space to create an environment filled with light, warm colors, and contrasting materials. The jury commented, “This project shows tremendous discipline and (used) simple materials which have been beautifully executed and pulled together”. The Center for Bioimage Informatics is located in Hamerschlag Hall in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and provides a new facility for the work of two esteemed scientists. Dr. Jelena Kovacevic, an electrical engineer who recently joined the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Robert F. Murphy, a computational biologist who has a joint appointment in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, will use the Center to explore cutting-edge problems in bioimaging. The Cener has state-of-the-art video-conferencing capabilities and occupies 1,750 square feet of space. Completed in February 2004, this project was constructed by Tedco Construction Corporation. Strada, an architecture, interior design, landscape, and urban design firm, is located in the Pittsburgh Cultural District and was founded in 2000 by Alan J. Cuteri, AIA, Edward A. Shriver, Jr., AIA, CCS, John A. Martine, AIA, and Michael A. Stern, ASLA. Strada employs 19 creative and passionate individuals who value knowledge, collaboration, and creativity.
