- John Martine to Serve as Juror for ASAI Competition
The American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) has appointed John A. Martine, AIA, and Doug Cooper, Andrew Mellon Professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, to jury the ASAI 2007 Architecture in Perspective 22 competition entries. Paul Rocheleau, a professional photographer from the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, completes the three-member jury, a group of highly-accredited professionals from diverse careers in the creative arts. The ASAI will gather in Pittsburgh for their annual convention in October at which time the competition results will be exhibited at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. For over thirty years, John A. Martine, AIA, has produced work that addresses two of the most crucial issues facing American cities today – preserving buildings’ heritages and developing new architecture that fits gracefully into the urban environment. To the design of office buildings, institutions, and residential developments, he brings his preservationist sensibilities, assuring that timeless proportions and details are present. The 1978 publication of John’s Streetfront and Storefront: A Planning and Program Guide for East Carson Street — a treatise on the principles and techniques of historic main street development — guided restoration initiatives not only on Pittsburgh’s Southside but in other historic districts as well. The resulting efforts were recognized by the National Trust, which included East Carson Street as its first urban entrant in its “Main Street” program. John is a lead design partner at Strada, an award-winning Pittsburgh architecture firm. Strada, an architecture, interior design, landscape, and urban design firm, is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Douglas Cooper, Andrew Mellon Professor of Architecture, has taught drawing in Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture since 1976 and is the author of a well-known text on the subject, Drawing and Perceiving. For the last 15 years he has focused on large panoramic murals (up to 200-feet long and 15-feet high) in various cities, world-wide, including the University Center at Carnegie Mellon University and the Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh. In many of these projects, he has worked with local residents and incorporated their life stories into the works, often with drawings in their own hands and with stories in their own languages. These murals present a highly personal record of the urban life of each city. He has written a memoir, Steel Shadows, on his mural work in Pittsburgh. In 2000, his work was honored by the AIA at its national convention for the contribution of his mural work to the field of architecture. Paul Rocheleau, a professional photographer for over thirty-five years, travels throughout the country photographing the finest and most interesting representations of Americana and American architecture for both book and magazine publishers. Working with prestigious publishers, Mr. Rocheleau has, as author, co-author/photographer, or principle photographer, been involved in over thirty book titles. His work has appeared in over one hundred magazines worldwide, and he has maintained a twenty-six year relationship as senior photographer for The Magazine Antiques. The American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) is a non-profit international professional organization of architectural illustrators, whose goals are to foster communication among architectural illustrators, to raise the standards of architectural illustration and to acquaint the public with the importance of such drawing as integral to the practice of architecture. For over twenty years, the American Society of Architectural Illustrators has sponsored the Architecture in Perspective competition and exhibition. Each year, architectural illustrators from all over the world submit their finest work with the prospect of being selected. The highest honor, the Hugh Ferriss award, is given to the entry which the jury deems "Best of Show." After opening in Pittsburgh in October, the ASAI AIP 22 Exhibit will travel worldwide throughout the year.
