- AIA PA Honor Award
The Mifflin Elementary School project seamlessly weaves a new addition into the original Art Deco and International Modernist historic structure. The principal architectural challenge was to create an image for the new addition that could blend harmoniously with the strong vocabulary of the original building, as well as that of the ‘50’s addition. The Strada project team was John Martine, AIA, Alan Cuteri, AIA, Michael Stern, ASLA, Cas Pellegrini, AIA, and Tom Price, AIA. The client was Pittsburgh Public Schools and Yarborough Development, Inc was the contractor.
Jury comments: This conveys the legacy of the old school, reinvented in a delightful way. It uses a simple architectural vocabulary on the outside, which is very comfortable and appropriate at completing the composition. A wonderful “kid-friendly” environment was created, without being “cute.” Great spaces were created that convey a sense of lightness, motion and life that is really compelling. The jury liked the way the exterior of the old structure was incorporated as part of the interior.
