John Martine, AIA Presents Seminars at Main Streets and Preservation PA Conferences

PITTSBURGH, PA — John A. Martine, AIA was invited to present “Transforming a Local Neighborhood into a Regional Destination” at the upcoming 2006 National Main Streets Conference in New Orleans, June 4-7. John, along with panel members Cathy McCullom from the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation and Tom Hardy, formerly of the South Side Local Development Corporation, will discuss the 30-year transformation of East Carson Street in Pittsburgh. As the original main street program, East Carson Street in now one of the city’s most vibrant and desirable neighborhoods, for both residents and visitors. This positive change continues today as new development – including historic rehabilitation, new infill, and whole new districts – proceed at a rapid pace and draws visitors to its historic streets. Session attendees will learn how to identify existing assets available to promote main street revitalization that is based on cultural and architectural history; understand how local groups can be formed and mobilized to effectively move self-directed revitalization forward, while avoiding conflicts and redundancy; and recognize how revitalization based on preservation can attract new development to adjacent areas, and how to defend against potential conflicts. John also recently presented “Building Rehab 101” at the 2006 Pennsylvania Heritage Partnerships Conference. The seminar discussed ways to preserve historic buildings while meeting current building code requirements. The conference, held May 18-19 in historic Franklin, PA, focused on Pennsylvania’s heritage and historic preservation efforts by citizens, business leaders, and government officials. For over thirty years, John A. Martine, AIA, has produced work that addresses two of the most crucial issues facing American cities today – preserving buildings’ heritages and developing new architecture that fits gracefully into the urban environment.
