- Strada Architects Present Seminar at Virginia Conference
PITTSBURGH, PA — John A. Martine, AIA and Tom Price, Associate AIA, will present “Patching Pittsburgh: Stitching the Past and the Present Together to Mend the Urban Fabric” at next week’s Architecture Exchange East, Virginia’s largest building and design conference. The conference, featuring more than 60 educational sessions for architects, planners, engineers, interior designers, contractors, and landscape architects, takes place Nov. 2-4, 2005, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. John Martine, an expert in historic restoration and adaptive reuse, and Tom Price, a project designer with Strada, will explain how Pittsburgh is breathing new life into its historic neighborhoods through contextually responsive design. While it is exciting to have famous architects contribute great buildings to a city like Pittsburgh, it is the responsibility of local architects to make the greatest impact on the urban fabric. Firms, like Strada, are striving to stitch the cities urban fabric together one place at a time through progressive contextual design. To demonstrate this process, John and Tom will present six projects of varying scales and complexities. All of these projects utilized the contextual design process to create places and spaces that reflect the past while looking toward the future. Participants will discover ways in which this approach can successfully be applied to projects of various scales and complexities. Architecture Exchange East, an offering of the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects, will feature experts addressing issues and their implications individually, as panels, and by “point/counterpoint” sessions. The conference also includes forums on current issues, including several sessions on “green” issues and the LEED™ system; collaborative efforts in project implementation; urban revitalization and building materials salvage and reuse; codes and accessibility regulations; acoustics; and security. Founded in 1914, the Virginia Society AIA is a professional organization representing more than 2,000 Virginia architects. The Virginia Society AIA is dedicated to advancing the knowledge of the art and science of architecture among professionals and expanding the awareness and appreciation of architecture among the general public.
